Times are changing, and with change comes uncertainty. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of new policies, restructuring, and shifting priorities, especially within a large organization like the USDA NRCS. As a retiree who dedicated years to this very agency and whose life work is about fostering and managing change, I understand the concerns and anxieties you may be facing. But I’m here to tell you that this storm, like all storms, will pass. And what matters most is how we weather it.
Remember Your Roots
First and foremost, remember what drew you to this work in the first place. Was it the call of the open land, the satisfaction of seeing a field thrive under your guidance, or the joy of collaborating with Producers who share your passion for conservation? These core values haven’t changed, and they remain the bedrock of the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s mission.
Professionalism as a Guiding Light
In times of uncertainty, professionalism becomes our compass. It’s about supporting one another, even with a simple smile or a word of encouragement2. It’s about maintaining a positive attitude and focusing on the tasks at hand. And above all, it’s about remembering that we are all part of a team, working towards our common goal – the conservation of our nation’s natural resources.
Pride in Your Expertise
Never forget the value you bring to this agency. You are trained professionals with a deep understanding of natural resource management1. You possess the knowledge and skills to assist farmers, ranchers, and foresters in making informed decisions about their land4. That expertise is invaluable, and it remains at the heart of NRCS’s success.
Focus on the Work
While change can be unsettling, it’s crucial to stay focused on your core responsibilities3. Continue to provide technical and financial assistance to those who need it1. Keep your head up and remember that your work has a direct impact on the health of our land and the well-being of our communities.
Reach Out for Support
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or demoralized, don’t hesitate to reach out to a retiree. We’ve been through big challenges, and we can offer guidance and support based on our experiences5. Sometimes, a conversation with someone who understands the history and values of NRCS can provide the reassurance and perspective you need to navigate these changing times.
Embrace the Journey
Remember the diverse landscapes you work with, from small urban gardens to vast rural grazing lands1. Recall the satisfaction of watching plants grow, crops flourish, and forests thrive under your guidance. These experiences are the heart and soul of your work at the NRCS.
Change is inevitable, but your commitment to conservation must remain constant. Embrace the journey, support one another, and never lose sight of the values that brought you to this important work.
